Two hundred miles, windmills included.
Cervantes never maps the knight’s travels exactly. This route is based on a plausible reading of the real places in the novel, with distances adapted to make a shorter, more manageable walk: 200 miles, with 18 waypoints drawn from the story. Every walk, run, or treadmill session your phone records moves you along it.
How long the journey takes
| You walk | You reach the end in |
|---|---|
| 2 miles a day (3 km) | about 14 weeks |
| 3 miles a day (5 km) | about 10 weeks |
| 5 miles a day (8 km) | about 40 days |
| 10 miles a day (16 km) | about 20 days |
A 10,000-step day is roughly 4 to 5 miles, which gets you to the end in about 45 days.

The famous episodes, on a shorter road.
Rather than tracing every stage of the knight-errant’s travels, this route keeps the defining ones. It starts on the plains of La Mancha, passes the famous windmills and lonely country inns, visits the Duke and Duchess’s estate, and reaches the Mediterranean at Barcelona before Don Quixote’s final return home.
Each waypoint pairs a restored postcard from Pedro de Rojas’s Don Quixote series with a moment from the novel. Arrive at one, and the next leg unlocks. For the whole 905-mile journey, try The Epic Road of Don Quixote.
Walk it together
Start a company and bring along a friend, a book club, or the whole office. Each of you walks your own miles, wherever you live, and together you follow the knight past the windmills to the sea at Barcelona.
